April’s gathering was marked by a strong spirit of fraternity, sacrifice, and apostolic zeal, as the brothers continued to deepen their commitment to Christ through Our Lady.
Formation: The Cross & Daily Sacrifice
Our first talk, delivered by Jeremy, drew from the spirituality of St Louis de Montfort, focusing on what it means to become a Friend of the Cross. As was reflected:
“The Cross is not merely something we are forced to carry. It is something we are given… not something we have to carry, but something we get to carry.”
The brothers were reminded that each cross is personally designed by Divine Wisdom, down to its weight and measure. Nothing in our lives is accidental or wasted. Every trial, inconvenience, and hidden suffering is ordered toward our sanctification.
We reflected on how easily we resist the small, daily crosses, yet these are precisely the means by which God forms us. Like a vessel crossing the bar, we must face our crosses directly, neither fleeing from them nor exaggerating them, but carrying them faithfully according to our state in life.
The second talk, given by Michael, turned to abnegation and oblation, emphasising that holiness is built not in grand gestures, but in fidelity to small things:
“The Christian life… is built in the thousand small choices by which a man either yields himself to Christ or keeps back a little piece of his heart.”
Drawing from the Little Way and Dominican spirituality, we were encouraged to embrace hidden sacrifices, small acts of self-denial, and quiet faithfulness. These daily offerings form a life that is truly given to God, a living sacrifice offered in love.
Apostolate: Public Witness
A major highlight this month was our public screening of The Passion of the Christ, which saw 150 tickets sold. This was a significant step forward for Viri Mariae as an outward-facing apostolate. It was a powerful opportunity to bring others into contact with the suffering of Christ, especially during the Easter season. We are grateful for the strong turnout and are hopeful that this will become a yearly Easter tradition at Balmoral Cinemas, serving as a consistent point of evangelisation and reflection in the years to come.
Looking Ahead: Retreat & Consecration
We are currently planning a Viri Mariae retreat day, centred around the 33-day Viri Mariae devotional, culminating in a formal Act of Commitment. This day will be dedicated to prayer, recollection, and fraternity, and we hope to invite a Dominican priest to deliver a talk and deepen the spiritual formation of the group.
Commitment for the Month
For the coming weeks, the brothers have committed themselves to a simple but demanding resolution:
To perfect the small things in daily life
To embrace small acts of self-denial
To pray for the grace to love our cross
This is where the battle is truly fought, not in extraordinary moments, but in hidden fidelity. In all things, we continue forward as men seeking not comfort, but Christ, striving to become living sacrifices through Mary, for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
